Cardboard baler solves waste and space challenges at Quay Quarter Tower
Quay Quarter Tower (QQT), the iconic building in Sydney’s Circular Quay, is home to bustling commercial and retail spaces that prioritize sustainability.
This case story explores QQT’s approach to overcoming waste challenges, highlighting its collaboration with Mil-tek and the transformative impact of installing a cardboard baler to enhance space efficiency and support sustainable waste management practices.

Marcela Barreto, waste and sustainability lead, discusses QQT’s waste management processes and highlights the transformative impact of using a baler.
A towering waste challenge in the heart of Sydney
Tenants at QQT, including commercial and retail businesses, generate substantial amounts of cardboard, paper, dry waste, organics, and other materials that require efficient management.
However, waste management in a high-rise like QQT is challenged by limited space, especially in the waste room at the building’s base.
Cardboard, in particular, takes up a disproportionate amount of space due to its bulk, often creating inefficiencies in storage and processing. Without proper compaction, cardboard can quickly overwhelm the available area, making it harder to handle other waste streams effectively.
QQT’s centralized waste management system
QQT has a centralized waste management system that streamlines operations through effective source segregation of the various waste materials generated.
Collected waste is transported to the waste room for thorough sorting, aligning with the sustainability goals of the building’s sustainability goals.
To address their challenges in managing bulky cardboard waste more effectively, QQT partnered with Mil-tek. Recognizing the strain that large volumes of cardboard placed on the limited space in their waste room, QQT sought a solution that would optimize space.
Cardboard baler maximizes waste room efficiency and frees up space
We installed a 2306 baler in QQT’s waste room – an older version of the A406 baler.
The installation of a cardboard baler has proven transformative, compacting materials efficiently and saving valuable space. This solution has optimized the waste handling process and resolved a major operational bottleneck.
The baler is not only easy to use but also supported by training and an app for seamless operation, ensuring that all personel handling the baler is confident and safe.
Looking ahead: Expanding waste solutions
Building on the success of the cardboard baler, QQT is exploring further enhancements to its waste management system.
Potential solutions include compaction systems for dry waste and oil cans, areas where Dimeo Cleaning Services is collaborating with Mil-tek for guidance.
These initiatives aim to continue driving sustainability, improve efficiency, and uphold the high standards of waste management that Quay Quarter Tower is known for.
In the words of Marcela Barreto, “With the right tools and processes in place, we’re making real progress toward sustainability.”
